Trekking In Morocco - Atlas Mountains & Desert Dunes

Trekking in Morocco takes you across a diverse range of landscapes that is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. In this article, I describe some stunning locations where you can embark on memorable hiking adventures. Most of these areas have well-marked trails and local guides available to lead you.
We'll look at the two main (and very different) options for hiking in Morocco; the rugged Atlas Mountains and the vast Sahara Desert. Between these regions, it's hard to say that one is better than the other. Your own preferences and interests will determine where you choose to trek. If you still can't decide, there's always the option to do a combination of both!

Erg Chebbi and Merzouga

Erg Chebbi is one of the most popular and accessible sand dune areas in the Sahara Desert. Located near the town of Merzouga in southeastern Morocco, the golden sand dunes here reach heights of up to 150 meters (500 feet). Doing a Sahara desert trekking trip in this region usually involves a multi-day tour, often with some stretches where you traverse the dunes on camelback and camp in traditional nomadic-style tents.
Highlights of this Morocco desert trek are breathtaking sunrise and sunset views and a chance to experience the silence and solitude of the desert.

Erg Chigaga

Situated further southwest of Erg Chebbi, Erg Chigaga is another stunning sand dune region in the Sahara. It is less touristy and offers a more remote and adventurous trekking experience. The dunes of Erg Chigaga are known for their seemingly endless appearance. Trekking here often involves longer expeditions, allowing you to immerse yourself in the desert landscape.

Desert Oases

Desert oases are small islands of green amongst the sea of sand.
The Sahara is not only about sand dunes; oases scattered throughout the region bring some life to the landscape. Trekking through these oases allows you to witness a contrast of surreal-looking greenery amongst the barren surroundings. Some popular desert oases in Morocco include the Draa Valley, the Todra Gorge, and the Dades Valley. These areas provide opportunities for exploring palm groves, visiting traditional villages, and enjoying the tranquillity of the desert oasis environment.

Timing

The best time to travel to Morocco is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) when the weather is pleasant. Morocco is a land of extremes. Summers can be very hot, especially in the desert regions. On the other end of the scale, winters can bring snow and make some trails inaccessible.

Guide and Accommodation

It is advisable to hire a local guide for your trek, especially in remote areas. They can provide valuable assistance, ensure your safety, and offer insights into the local culture. High Atlas Mountains accommodation options range from basic guesthouses to mountain huts.

Physical Fitness & Health

Trekking in Morocco can be physically demanding. The desert can get uncomfortably hot and many trekkers suffer from heatstroke to some degree.
Make sure to assess your fitness level and choose treks that match your capabilities. Additionally, pack appropriate gear, including sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing, a sun hat, sunscreen, and a first-aid kit. Finally, make sure you take out good travel insurance for Morocco trips.
