Mt Toubkal Climb & Sahara Desert Trip 5 Days

On this combined trip, you will do 2 days climb up to the highest peak ( Mount Toubkal 4167m) in North Africa & in Morocco; and you will finish by exploring the sahara desert & other very nice spots along the way. You will visit many beautiful places such as Kasbah Ait Benhaddou; Ouarzazate city, Dades valley & Merzouga dunes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - Imlil 1740m - Toubkal Refuge 3206m

You will be picked up from your accommodation in Marrakech, and drive towards Imlil valley from where you will start the trek. Once you are met by the local team, you will set off trekking in the valley of Aït Mizane, towards the village of Aremd then the sanctuary of Sidi Chamarouch and the nearby waterfall. Continue on steep paths to the Toubkal refuge, where you will spend the night at a refuge. (4-5 hours of walking)

Day 2: Refuge 3206m - Toubkal summit 4167m - Refuge 3206m - Imlil 1740m.

Start the day early to reach the summit of Jbel Toubkal, the highest point in North Africa. Cross streams and make your way through the rocks. Join the plateau and take a break to enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding area including the plain of Marrakesh and the High Atlas in the north, and the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara to the south Once you reach the summit, gently start the way back to the bottom of the mountain and to Imlil where you will spend the night at a guesthouse. around 10h walk.

Day 3: Imlil - Kasbah Ait Benhaddou - Ouarzazate - Dades valley.

Today, we pick you up from your Hotel in Imlil at 7:30, and departure to Ait Benhaddou over the high Atlas Mountains; passing through the Tizi N’tichka pass (2260m), visit the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou and stop for lunch in a local restaurant. In the Afternoon we will drive to Ouarzazate and stop near the atlas film studios for a photo then continue to the city center for a panoramic view of the kasbah of Taourirt. After that you will head to Boumalne du Dades for a night.Dinner and overnight at a Hotel.

Day 4: Dades - Merzouga dunes.

The next day, we drive through the Dades Valley and Todra Gorges, allowing us to explore the sights of this region. Lunch can be taken at any Restaurant on our way. Arrival to Merzouga is the final destination of today, where we meet our camels to take us to the Dunes of Erg Chebbi , where we will spend the night at a Berber desert camp. Overnight

Day 5: Merzouga - Marrakech.

After enjoying the amazing sunrise among the sand dunes and having breakfast, you ride camels back the place where our drive will be waiting for us. You drive directly back to Marrakech and have few stops on the way. Enjoying your lunch then we continue to the red city of Marrakech over the mountains of high Atlas passing through the Tizi N’tichka. Arrival to Marrakech and Drop off in your accomodation in Marrakech.

You will follow a sensible acclimatisation plan that works well for most participants. This includes regular breaks and a gradual increase in the altitude at which you sleep.

Altitude affects everyone in different ways. However, the key is to mention if you are experiencing any symptoms to your guide (headache/nausea) as soon as you feel them.  

This is a challenging Trek. You will be walking around 6 to 7h each day. The summit day can be 9-12 hours (with lots of breaks) so you do need a good level of fitness. We recommend training with jogging or sport 1-2 times a week, in the run-up to your trip.  

This Trek is moderate. You should be fit enough, but it does not involve any technical skills.

Start: Your guide will come and pick you from your accommodation in Marrakech in the early morning on the first day.

End: Drop off will be near your hotel in Marrakech on the last day.
