This is a challenging trek that takes you through mountainous terrain, over 5 days. You need to be able to trek up to 17km a day. You also need to be comfortable with rights as there are some steep sections and climbing sections using short roping (where you will be attached to the guide and the team but not to the rock).
- Hiking boots - Backpack 30L or similar - Sun protection - sunhat, suncream and sunglasses - Long trousers - Shorts - Waterproof jacket - T-shirts for trekking - Fleece - Underwear - Hiking socks - Small towel - Toiletries - Headtorch - Water bottle - Hiking sticks (optional) - Shell jacket - Gloves and beanie - Power Bank - Money for food and drinks
Short-roping is a mountaineering technique that involves a rope team moving together on steep or technical terrain, typically with shorter rope intervals between climbers. The leader (guide) anchors the rope to provide a measure of security for the entire team (i.e. the rope is not attached to the rock). The climbers maintain a shorter rope length between them, allowing for swift communication, increased control, and quicker response to potential hazards. You will be provided with helmets and harnesses for this ascent.
Refuges are basic but comfortable mountain huts with stunning views, simple facilities and shared (dormitory style) sleeping arrangements. All refuges provide food and have restaurants. Although the menus have a variety of options, it is not uncommon for the kitchens to run out of certain ingredients. Please be understanding under the circumstances that this is isolated, mountain accommodation. We recommend taking around 30 Euro per day per person (meals and water). Bring extra for hot drinks, etc. The refuges on this trek all have Running water and toilets. Spillos Agapitos (Night 3) has cold showers available. All other refuges usually have running water to take a 'bucket bath'. Note that, although rare, there can be dry spells in the mountains where running water is not available. You will be provided with blankets but, for hygiene reasons, you need to bring your own sleeping bag or sleeping bag liner. Please also note that as these are shared, dormitory rooms, it's a good idea to bring earplugs and an eye mask! The refuges have electricity and plug points (European). These power outlets are usually in high demand so it's worth bringing a power bank. The refuges sell Bottled water and drinks
Included: - Guide - Accommodation - Technical equipment (Harness and helmet) - Snacks (sandwich for the day 2, 3 & 4) Excluded: - International flights - Meals (Budget about 30EUR per day) - Travel insurance - Visa (if applicable)
We recommend you fly into Thessaloniki Airport (SKG). It takes around 1.5 hours to get to Litochoro from Thessaloniki Airport. The quickest way is to take a taxi and this is usually a good option if you are travelling with a few other people (typically costs around 125 EUR). Alternatively you can take the airport bus to Thessaloniki station (around 45 minutes) and then the train to Litochoro (1 hour and around 5 EUR). From Litochoro station it is a short taxi ride to the main square (10 EUR).
Yes, you will be trekking from refuge to refuge and need to carry your own backpack so it's best to pack light. Unfortunately porters or transfers are not available on this route.
