Join us on an unforgettable camping adventure into the heart of the Svalbard's wilderness, hours away from civilization. Nestled in the stunning location of Ymerbukta, the trip offers a variety of activities, including kayaking, hiking, and glacier walking. Get ready to encounter unique wildlife in their rugged arctic habitat and experience the true essence of the wilderness! The tour includes a scenic boat trip to get to the location and back.
Our adventure begins with a pick-up at 7:30 AM from your accommodation. We start with a briefing at our storage facility, during which we make sure everyone has all the necessary equipment. From there, we drive to the harbour and board a boat bound for Ymerbukta, crossing the Isfjorden. The journey takes about two hours, after which we transfer to shore using zodiacs.
Once we arrive at our destination, we set up camp together, learning the best practices for pitching tents and organising our site. After settling in, we spend the day familiarising ourselves with the surroundings, embarking on a short kayak trip. Our guides will demonstrate the proper kayaking techniques and provide supervision to ensure everyone's safety and enjoyment.
In the evening, we review the weather forecast and plan our activities for the next day before heading to bed, ready for the adventures ahead! At night, the first round of polar bear watch begins, where you and the guides will take shifts. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy some alone time with a fantastic backdrop.
After a hearty breakfast, we head towards the Esmark Glacier, with its imposing front. Donning our glacier equipment, including crampons and harnesses, we hike onto the glacier under the guidance of our guides. They'll share essential techniques and best practices to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
Midday brings a picturesque lunch on the glacier, with stunning views of the mighty glacier formations and the inlet ahead. In the afternoon, we make our way back towards the camp, soaking in the serenity of the Arctic landscape. Back at camp, we come together to prepare dinner and get ready for bed.
We begin the process of breaking down camp, packing away our gear and memories. Before departing, we take a short walk in the surrounding area, soaking in the final moments of our stay in Ymerbukta.
As our journey draws to an end, the boat will arrive to pick us up, offering a last opportunity to gaze upon the rugged Svalbard landscape. On board, we enjoy lunch together and spend a few hours looking for whales in the icy waters of Isfjorden. We then make our way back to Longyearbyen, where our adventure first began.

Your sleeping bag should have an extreme rating down to approximately -15°C and a comfort rating between 0°C and 5°C. Sleeping bags can also be rented from your host for an additional cost of 600NOK.

It’s highly recommended you take out personal travel insurance. Travel cover protects you in the case of unforeseen circumstances including cancellations, injuries, equipment loss, flight changes and other events that could negatively impact your trip. We suggest specialist adventure travel insurers, Rise & Shield. They cover 100s of activities and are easy to deal with if you need to make a claim. They also cover unique scenarios, like trekking at altitude or emergency evacuation in hard-to-reach places, that ordinary travel insurance doesn’t cover. On your trip
Yes, we can cater for different dietary requirements such as vegan, vegetarian, allergies etc. Please let us know when you book.
We highly recommend Guesthouse 102, a cozy and laid-back accommodation in Longyearbyen. It has a warm and welcoming vibe and guests can easily meet other travelers.
All group members will take turns to look out for polar bears while the rest of the group sleeps. The experience of being on the lookout is one of the most memorable parts of the trip and has been described as "like being a crew member on a David Attenborough documentary". You'll be given a full briefing and safety instructions and a shift roster will be developed between you all. Only one person is generally on lookout at a time. Lookout shifts are generally around two hours. However, if the group size is larger than four, you will have at least one night where your sleep is not disrupted by a shift. While on this trip you will be in the hands of expert wilderness guides. Your host has been operating wildlife expeditions in the area for over 25 years and has never had a close call with a polar bear. This is all down to their knowledge and expertise. There are polar bears in the area and they have come close to camp before, but the guides know exactly what to do in all cases.
You will be picked up at the hotel you are staying at in Longyearbyen on the first day of the trip at 7:30 AM. Remember to inform the hotel that you want an early breakfast.
With a maximum of 10 guests plus our guides, we can ensure a more personal experience.
At the wilderness camp, breakfasts will consist of cereals or oatmeal, tea, coffee and 'Polar Bread' as well as possibly bread, ham and cheese. Lunches will be dry-pack expedition-style meals, heated using water boiled while you're out in the wilderness and accompanied by hot drinks and biscuits. You can make extra sandwiches each morning to bring with you if you want a particularly large lunch. Dinners are homemade and vary depending on what's in stock. Tacos, pasta or a variety of stews are possibilities. Please inform us when booking if you have any dietary restrictions.
We will be sleeping in nature with no facilities around other than what we bring. You will be divided into tent parties of two. In addition, we have a heated kitchen tent, where we can spend time together while in camp. We also have a toilet tent.
