Jordan Bike Trail: Cycle Through Petra & Wadi Rum

2

An unforgettable 8-day cycling and hiking adventure along the breathtaking Jordan Bike Trail! This trip is perfect for those seeking a challenge while experiencing the stunning natural beauty of the Jordanian landscape.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Airport - Amman

Welcome to Jordan! Take some time to arrive, check into your hotel room, and have a first experience of the delightful Jordanian cuisine. Depending on when your flight arrived, you will even have some time to explore Amman by yourself.

Amman is Jordan’s capital and one of the oldest cities in the world. Inhabited since the Bronze Age, the city has grown into a modern city with all that you might expect. Despite this amazing growth, Amman has retained its character and traditions, and the culture of hospitality and generosity is still very present across the city.

Meet your guide at 8 am and transfer south to Shobak (2hrs 40min). Our cycling adventure starts from nearby Shobak castle, the first of the series of Crusader Castles built in Jordan; get a chance to take some panoramic photos before we take off. We start with a familiarization ride as we cycle for a short bit on the road to get to our local host house for a delicious lunch. After some time to relax, we carry on biking off-road on a mixture of dirt tracks and roads to Little Petra.

This stage of Jordan Bike Trail is stated as one of the most epic ones. The route contours around the mountains of Dana and Petra with great views across the Jordan valley. We finish the ride with a visit to Little Petra. Then cycle to your overnight camp

hidden in the rocks and enjoy the hospitality of the Bedouins.

Cycling: 50 km; +1,150m; – 1,570; 30% off-road.

After breakfast, it’s time to start your hike. Enter Petra via ‘The Back Door’ avoiding most of the tourists. Good tracks make for a pleasant cycle down Wadi Ghurab amidst sandstone mountains guarding the approaches to Petra. This way follows a Nabataean route out of the valley and skirting around the final mountain on a natural rock terrace which has been ‘improved’ for the safety of walkers. Even so, it still narrows slightly before reaching a hidden plateau high above the impressive chasm of Wadi Siyyagh.

Just beyond, carved into the cliff face, ‘The Monastery’ suddenly comes into view, where there is a Bedouin café, if you would like to purchase refreshments. Nabataean steps lead down into ancient Petra before exiting past ‘The Treasury’ and through the famous ‘Petra Siq’ to the shops, cafés and hotels of Wadi Musa. Then take a short transfer back to Little Petra (about 15 mins) for the second night of your stay.

Hiking Distance: 14-16km

After breakfast, we take a transfer (approx. 40 min) out of Wadi Musa following the Kings Way. Starting at about 1600m above sea level, our trail winds a pleasant descent to the village of Toghra where the pavement meets the dirt. As we’re getting more and more south, you’ll notice the trail flattens as we approach Wadi Rum. Stop for a cup of tea at a local Bedouin family en route to learn more about the culture before we continue cycling to Wadi Rum across some sandy segments and mud flats.

Once the ride is over, we jump on the jeep for a transfer (30 min.) through the desert to our overnight location.

Cycling: 70 Km; +500m; -1350m; 50% off-road.

A jeep transfer (20 min.) out of our camp and then we will spend a couple of hours cycling on the desert mud flats around Wadi Rum. Later on, we take around 4 hours jeep safari. We thoroughly explore this World Heritage Site, travelling around Wadi Rum’s valleys, canyons, dunes and deserts. Discover rock inscriptions, majestic views of mountains and landscapes and narrow gorges. At each stop, you have the opportunity to hike, scramble and explore in your own time. You enjoy a simple lunch cooked in the desert in the shade of the mountains. In the evening, we return back to our camp.

Cycling: 37 Km; +150m; -400m; 48% off-road.

Cycle between the sandstone mountains on the desert sands all the way through the largest Wadi in Jordan. Once arrived at the Village of Titen, we join the tarmac and bike all the way to the Desert Highway. Here we meet the vehicle and take a short transfer (20 min.)Aqaba, Jordan’s window to the Red Sea. Aqaba brings a refreshing variation to the sands of Wadi Rum and Petra. While in Aqaba, you’ll get a day pass to one of the resorts to spend your well-deserved time by the Red Sea.

Cycling: 41Km; +140m; -680m; 65% off-road.

Overnight: Hotel in Aqaba.

After breakfast, head towards the Dead Sea (approx. 4hr drive) where you will spend the day floating and relaxing at one of the resorts.

Enjoy the sunshine at the lowest point on earth, whilst trying out the invigorating mud bath to cleanse the skin. You may even want to get a spa treatment! Watch the sunset over the hills of the West Bank with Jerusalem in the distance.

Transfer to Amman (about 1hr) for our last night in the hotel.

I've planned a cycling trip with Experience Jordan Adventures from Sunday 4 February to Thursday 8 February 2024 from Amman to Aqaba, 4 days cycling (about 200km) and one day hiking from Little Petra to Petra (about 17km). Incredible scenery, over 1100 photos. They take care of everything from start to finish, no surprises, they make your experience an incredible one. You realise that they only work with the best. Right from the start you can see the professionalism and experience of everyone involved. Anton's briefing and support before/during/after each stage, Anas' advice and routes for safe cycling. The guide Mahmood, who made our trek from little Petra to Petra unforgettable with his knowledge of the area, as he is a native of Petra. Our driver Ab Hamza was also perfect, very attentive and knowledgeable. The choice of places to sleep, the magic and friendliness of the little Petra Bedouin camp, the proximity of the Maison Petra Hotel and the unique location of the Rainbow Camp in Wadi Rum to enjoy the sunset. We were welcomed like kings at every stage, and fell in love with Jordanian cuisine. The maklouba at the "little Petra Bedouin camp" was a delight, and the musakhan in Petra was a delight. The Bedouin tea during all the stages was delicious. The choice of routes, they adapt to offer us a unique experience. I've travelled a lot and Experience Jordan Adventures is truly exceptional. You can go there with your eyes closed, you won't be disappointed. They make your dreams come true. One of my best trips, thank you Anton, Anas, Mahmood and Ab Hamza, we will be back.

It was a great experience. Visited main tourist attractions in Jordan, whilst at the same time enjoying cycling & hiking. Activities are not too hard, but are still challenging and require a reasonable level of fitness. Petra & Wadi Rum are 'grade A' bucket list. The visit to the Holiday Inn resort at the Dead Sea was also very pleasant, and nicer than on the other side of the water where it is less resort orientated. Accommodation & organisation were good throughout, and the tour leader & other guides were excellent

The experience is extremely rewarding and absolutely worth the effort! It’s a group tour and our pace is approximately 9 km/hr including regroups, snacks, water and lunch breaks en route. The average riding speed is about 14 km/hr. If you are not confident about some trails’ difficulty in the itinerary, do not hesitate to get in contact with us before booking.

You’ll be staying at very well-located 3/4-star hotels in Amman / Aqaba, and locally owned Bedouin camps in Little Petra and Wadi Rum. While the Beoduin camps are still called Camps – these are stationary ones and more of a glamping. Twin Share tents have proper beds and bedding. Little Petra camp has an ensuite bathroom and AC unit, while accommodation in Wadi Rum is more basic but quite strategic on the Jordan Bike Trail – a shared bathroom facility without AC or heaters. Hotel rooms are on a twin-share (2 pax) basis with the same gender. In wilderness camping, we usually use single tents, while in the camps in Little Petra and Wadi Rum, it is again shared Twin/Double tents with men and women sharing toilets and bathrooms. Should you prefer your own room, a solo supplement is available. The cost of this is $200 (for the whole trip). Please message us after booking to arrange this through the 'Message you guide' button under your booking.
